Why Study Here

The Balkans refer to a geographic region in the southeastern peninsula of Europe. It is undoubtedly the most diverse region of Europe, with many people, religions, and cultures living alongside each other. There is some debate about which countries make up the Balkans, but usually included are Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Croatia, and sometimes Greece and the European side of Turkey.

The region has a complex and turbulent history. In the 1990s, the region was known for the Yugoslav wars, which were ethnic conflicts between former Yugoslav Republics of the Balkans. However, the region is now at peace and has not seen conflict since 2002. The different nations that comprise the Balkans are known for their immense beauty and rich culture. Currently, there are two nations in the Balkans that you can study: Slovenia and Croatia.

Situated below Slovenia is Croatia. It is a diverse country known for its stunning coastline and historic cities such as Dubrovnik. The country has a population of 4 million people, who are renowned for their hospitality and relaxed vibe. The country enjoys a Mediterranean climate and is a popular tourist destination in the summer. In fact, Croatia was ranked as the 18th most popular tourist destination in the world! In particular, the Adriatic Sea coastline attracts activities such as sailing, swimming, and snorkeling.

Croatia also has lots to do and see inland, with a host of theatres and museums to keep you entertained.

All full-time international students can apply for "occasional student work".

Health Insurance

Proof of health insurance is required to obtain a residence permit in Croatia. Students from the US must show proof of health insurance coverage to the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance for the duration of their stay in Croatia.

Proof of Means Req's

The student must demonstrate sufficient funds for support. Either a scholarship or proof of access to funds in the amount of at least 1,000 Kuna (in 2016, $142) per month for 12 months is required. The proof of receiving a scholarship is issued by the legal entity granting the scholarship. A bank statement is sufficient to show proof of means.

Student Residence

Once your application has been accepted and you've decided to attend school in Croatia, it's time to start the visa process with the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The visa application can be submitted in person or via e-mail. A list of missions and consulates is available on the website of the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The following documents must be submitted with the application for temporary residence for the purpose of studying:
one color photo 35x45 mm;

A passport and a photocopy of a passport; proof of housing; proof of health insurance; proof of financial means; and proof of admittance to your Croatian school written in the Croatian language.
