Esch-sur-Alzette
About the City
A cosmopolitan city with a turbulent past, Esch-Sur-Alzette is known for its architectural monuments (Violet le Duc, Joseph Stübben, Gottfried Böhm, and Peter Rice are just a few names of great architects who have worked here) and its good shopping infrastructure.
The second largest city in the country is located 17 km from the capital and 25 km from the international airport. Many cultural attractions await the visitor: the National Resistance Museum, metallurgical factories, monuments, architectural walk through the city center, Belvedere, parks (Stübben), St. Joseph’s churches, Town Hall, Municipal Theater with the international program, art galleries, libraries, music conservatory, and numerous events.
The history of the city and its region exceeds 5,000 years. Esch-Sur-Alzette owes its current importance to the surrounding iron ore. The leisure and recreation center at Galgenberg includes a wonderful park, signposted walks, a rose garden, fountains and waterfalls, playgrounds, animal enclosures, and several sports facilities. The possibilities for entertainment are numerous: popular festivals, discos, dance halls, hotels, renowned restaurants, and bars.
