Galați
About the City
Galati is the capital city of Galati County in the eastern Romanian region of Moldavia. Located on the Danube river and 80 kilometers away from the Black Sea, it established itself as one of the major ports on the Danube that connects the east to the west. The city has an industry-based economy as its metallurgical industry accounts for about half of the national steel production. Its economy is also shaped around its port, which hosts the largest shipyard in Romania. Major players in the shipbuilding industry are operating in the city, including DAMEN Shipyards Galaţi and the Naval Research and Design Institute of Galaţi. In 2005, Galati ranked in the top two cities in Romania for green space per capita, giving it strong potential for urban planning.
The city aims to become more attractive to its own citizens, businesses, and tourists. Its priorities are improving living conditions, sustainable job creation, empowering its citizens, and most of all, retaining its skilled workforce and university graduates.
