Illkirch-Graffenstaden
About the City
llkirch-Graffenstaden, a natural and innovative city… With over 27,000 inhabitants, Illkirch-Graffenstaden, the fourth largest town on the Lower Rhine, has become particularly attractive south of the city of Strasbourg, its economic, commercial, and cultural center.
It has evolved while maintaining a human dimension that gives it a reputation as a natural and innovative city. A few kilometers from the center of Strasbourg, served by tram, it occupies a privileged location, close to its German neighbors, Kehl and Offenburg, with whom a cultural partnership has been established for several years. Water is a strong element in the city crossed by Ill, bordered by the Canal du Rhône-au-Rhin and its surroundings, where gravel provides places to swim and cool off.
The forest of Illkirch-Graffenstaden, near the Rhine, reinforces this commitment to nature. A place to walk many Illkirchois, the forest is also a protected ecological lung, classified as a National Nature Reserve. Based on a former industrial history with a substantial commercial fabric, Illkirch-Graffenstaden has a strong pool of jobs where future technologies are being developed in the heart of the Parc d’Innovation.
Always in motion, the city built a new center on the former brownfield SACM factory to better grow and regain the banks of Illinois. “Green and dynamic”, Illkirch-Graffenstaden is also a city of culture and events, sports, and recreation, where many services offer people a quality of life greatly appreciated.
