Ísafjarðarbær was formed in 1996 by merging six municipalities in the northern Westfjords; Þingeyrarhreppur, Mýrarhreppur, Mosvallahreppur, Flateyrarhreppur, Suðureyrarhreppur, and Ísafjarðarkaupstaður.
The merged municipality is by far the largest in the Westfjords and the population on 1 January 2020 was 3,809 people, which is more than half of all the Westfjords. The bulky industries in the municipality are the fishing industry, tourism, and other service jobs.
Life in Ísafjarðarbær is diverse and the cultural life is rich, in addition to which there are many opportunities for sports and outdoor activities.
