Ålesund
About the City
Alesund is renowned both nationally and internationally for its architecture and is a member of the Rèseau Art Nouveau Network, a European network of Art Nouveau cities, including, among others, Glasgow, Barcelona, and Vienna. Today, the historical buildings house a charming town with exciting cafeterias and restaurants, shops, galleries, and different accommodation opportunities.
A wide selection of shops and galleries makes even shopping enthusiasts feel at home. Along the picturesque fishing harbor of Brosundet lie sea houses, which were originally used for receiving and preparing fish. Today, they house hotels, offices, and shops. If you are lucky, you might also have the opportunity to buy shrimp directly from a local fisherman. Take the trip up the 418 steps to the top of Aksla—the reward will be a panoramic view of the coast, fjords, and mountains surrounding the city.
Lift your gaze while you explore the town and you will discover the many and varied expressions of Art Nouveau. You will find elements of German Art Nouveau or Jugendstil with elegant organic lines and asymmetry, hewn stone buildings inspired by American architecture, and National Romantic details from the architecture of the stave churches.
