Burgdorf
About the City
Here, life takes place around the historic city center all year round, with a wide variety of cultural events and a diverse range of retail and gastronomic options. Burgdorf can now look back on over 725 years of city history. The cityscape is shaped by the historic old town, with its small-scale development.
Half-timbered buildings, some of which are listed individually and some as an ensemble, ensure a very special stay and shopping experience. This is all the more remarkable when you know that large parts of the old town were destroyed by large fires in 1658 and 1809.
The present city plan and the existing historical building fabric, therefore, come mainly from the first half of the 19th century. The oldest houses that were spared from the city fire in 1809 are around the street Am Brandende.
The castle in the city center forms the historical nucleus of the city. The current building, from 1643, stands on the site of the earlier castle that gave the town its name. Inside, it was completely modernized in the last century and is used as an administration building.
The castle forms the transition between the old town and the city park, a typical landscape park of the 20th century. The city also gave its surrounding area, the Burgdorfer Land, its name. This powerful, pristine landscape in the east of the Lower Saxony state capital of Hanover invites you to discover it from place to place, whether on foot or from the saddle of a horse or bicycle.
Half-timbered farms, asparagus fields, forests, and moors characterize this area. In between, residential areas that are cautiously integrated into the still partly agricultural villages that meet all forms of modern living requirements can be found again and again.
Burgdorf is always worth a visit; it is a city in which there is a lot to discover for visitors of all ages and in which it is better to live. Try it out… Discover and experience Burgdorf and the Burgdorfer Land!
