The present city plan and the existing historical building fabric, therefore, come mainly from the first half of the 19th century. The oldest houses that were spared from the city fire in 1809 are around the street Am Brandende.
The castle in the city center forms the historical nucleus of the city. The current building, from 1643, stands on the site of the earlier castle that gave the town its name. Inside, it was completely modernized in the last century and is used as an administration building.
The castle forms the transition between the old town and the city park, a typical landscape park of the 20th century. The city also gave its surrounding area, the Burgdorfer Land, its name.
