Gottingen
About the City
Göttingen: the city that furthers science; the university city; the student city; the city of Gauß and Lichtenberg. Outsiders know Göttingen as the festival city where theatre, literature, and music are celebrated. The city is known for its Internationale Händel-Festspiele (International Handel Festival) as well as the Pop Festival (Pop Festival), Literaturherbst literature festival, and the Jazzfestival (Jazz Festival).
The historic city center, which is dominated by medieval churches and the mighty Old Town Hall, has been almost entirely pedestrianized. Visitors love to stroll around the quirky shops on the attractive side streets and enjoy a leisurely meal in one of the city’s many restaurants. In summer, pavement cafés exude Mediterranean flair.
In the winter, many restaurants serve dishes from all over the world in a cozy atmosphere. The city is one of Germany’s most conveniently situated: Göttingen is just a short trip away, regardless of whether you travel by car (A7, A38 motorways), train (more than 100 Inter-City-Express (ICE) trains stop here every day) or bus.
