In this course, you will explore curating art and design as a creative and collaborative practice in response to a range of real-world contexts and communities.
Curating can take many forms from working with collections to temporary commissions or producing events and publications. Whether you are working with or as an artist, you will develop your practice guided by your interests and ambitions.
Your work will be supported by lectures, workshops and seminars with internationally experienced practitioners and researchers in the fields of contemporary art, design, writing and performance
The course will help you expand your creative, critical, and technical skills. You will also gain practical experience in exhibition-making and event production.
Topics of study include:
- exhibition formats and curatorial platforms
- event-based curating and public programming
- experimental curating
- collaborative approaches to curating
- working with media art archives and collections
- curating research and research exhibitions
- different modes of writing within curatorial practice
- curatorial activism
- artist as curator
- design thinking for curators
- project planning, marketing and fundraising
- working with publics
- installation and documentation
- commissioning
Learning in the art school environment of DJCAD, you’ll have access to a shared curatorial studio space. Also, you will also have access to workshops, library, exhibition and learning spaces.
You will benefit from learning through engagement with exhibition programmes across the University, including Cooper Gallery which is a Plus Tate organisation.
You will also have access to DJCAD’s unique archival holdings including:
- The Alastair MacLennan Performance Art Archive
- REWIND Archive of Early Video Art
- Digital Demarco Archive
- The Artists’ Book Collection Dundee (abcD)
Outside of the University, your learning will be further developed through engaging with our institutional partner, the V&A Dundee, and other art and culture organisations in and around Dundee.

Admissions Requirements
Bachelor Degree in a relevant subject with 3.0 - 3.49 / 4.0. You may also apply if you are able to demonstrate appropriate professional experience.
You will need to submit a personal statement, of 500 words, with your application explaining:
-Your motivation for undertaking the course
-Why you are appropriate for this course (relevant skills and work experience)
-What expectations you have of the course
-How you feel the course will benefit you
-You could include images and videos to help us understand your work and abilities better.
If you meet our entry requirements, you will be invited for an informal conversation with the Programme Director. You will be contacted to arrange an online interview at a mutually suitable time.
