Profile
Musical composition can, in its most basic form, sensitize us to the specific contexts through which sound is experienced. To accept Luigi Nono’s challange that composition can reawaken one’s senses in order to participate in something much larger than ourselves is the key challenge for contemporary musical composition. At the Academy of Music and Drama (Hogskolan for scen och musik) we accept such an orientation by focusing upon a student’s artistic growth and conceptual thinking in conjunction with a student’s experimentation with instrumental sound, notation and structural thinking. Ideally, composers at Hogskolan for scen och musik develop as artistic forces in the local and global contexts of our society in order to create unique artistic expressions, and reflections of human values through their compositions and cross-border co-operations. Hogskolan for scen och musik (HSM) is an open and creative meeting point with windows out to the world, which is why we emphasize interdisciplinary knowledge and collaborations with other programs such as opera, theater, film, literature, poetry, architecture and the visual arts. We also offer technical expertise in a variety of technologies with our Lindblad Studio. The program aims to prepare for upcoming activities as a professional composer, but can also serve as a basis for further studies at the doctoral level. The basis of the instruction includes individual tuition, analysis seminars, aesthetics seminars and open score seminars in conjunction with the Improvisation Department. Opportunites for composers include various chamber ensembles formed with performance students and the choir at HSM, international renowned professional ensembles, Stockholm Wind Orchestra, Norrkoping Symphony Orchestra, Musica Vitae String Orchestra and various outside projects that can include collaborations with the Gothenburg Opera, sound installations and various electronic music collaborations.
