Profile
The EMerald Master in Resources Engineering (Innovative Education in Geometallurgy and Circular Economy) was created as a response to Europe’s skills shortage in the field of raw materials. After decades of withdrawal from the primary industry it was then high time to reinvest into a master program targeting excellence and addressing crucial industrial needs. 4 European mining schools joined their effort to create EMerald: – the University of Liège, Belgium (main coordinator), – the University of Lorraine – École Nationale Supérieure de Géologie de Nancy, France, – Luleå University of Technology, Sweden,-Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany. This 2-year (120 ECTS) Master educates a new generation of young professionals integrating a perfect knowledge of available mineral/metal resources and modern engineering technologies. The first year has a strict mobility path: Semester 1 in ULiège and Semester 2 in UL (Nancy). Liège offers leveling courses in Mineral Resources, Geostatistics or Mineral Processing. Nancy goes a step further in the fields of Orebody modeling and Ore reserve estimation. At the same time, students are trained in the field of surface chemistry and experiment their first pilot-scale plant project. The second year, students may choose their own track: semester 3 either in LTU (Luleå) or TUBAF (Freiberg). In Luleå, students deepen their knowledge in geometallurgy and mineral processing (focus on primary resources). In Freiberg, students focus mainly on secondary resources with courses on metallurgical processes and recycling. During the last semester, EMerald students will join one of the 4 partner universities to work on a master thesis subject suggested by an industrial partner of the program. The program is supported by a strong network of industrial and academic partners. They help the consortium respectively in organizing professional seminars/field trips/internships and recruiting students worldwide. More than an insight of the industrial world, the EMerald program aims to raise the students’ awareness and understanding of the whole raw materials value chain. This is why they have the opportunity to attend a three-week Business School between year 1 and year 2 which teaches them basic management principles: marketing, LCA, business model, business game etc…The selection of the students is a cooperative process between the four partner-universities and is based on a consensus.
