Profile
Bard College Berlin’s BA degree in Humanities, the Arts, and Social Thought affords students the opportunity to gain a thorough training in the fields of the humanities, while also acquiring a knowledge of the key intellectual developments, works, and debates that lie at the origin of the disciplines of the social and natural sciences and the practicing arts. The core program consists of courses that address some of the most important texts and artifacts in the cultural legacies of Europe and the world. In addition to the core program, students choose one of the following areas of concentration: Art and Aesthetics, Ethics and Politics, Literature and Rhetoric. Electives in studio arts (theater, dance, painting, art production) are also available, as are a wide range of electives in philosophy, art history, literature, film, and social theory. Students progress toward the completion of a BA thesis in the fourth year, under the supervision of an individual faculty member. Studying abroad in Europe (through the ERASMUS network), in the United States (at Bard College or its affiliated programs and campuses), and around the world (in the Bard network or through Bard College Berlin’s international exchange agreements) is possible in the third year. An internship program supports the undertaking of practical training or work experience at any stage of the degree. Language study in German from beginner to advanced level is available throughout the program. All B.A. in Humanities, the Arts, and Social Thought candidates must demonstrate intermediate proficiency in German by the end of their second year.
